When extending or renovating a home, we often find bifold and stacking doors are two popular choices for homeowners who want to create a seamless indoor-outdoor space. As home renovation builders, we understand the appeal of both door types. While these two options serve a similar purpose, there are some key differences between the two.

Can’t decide which door type you want to include in your new indoor outdoor space? You should understand each door type and consider a few important factors to make the right choice.

Have a look below to find the right door for your project.

Bifold doors

Bifold doors are made up of multiple panels that fold and slide along a track, stacking neatly against one another when opened. Bifold doors are a great option for those who want to maximise the opening space, as they can be designed to fold back completely and create a wide opening.

They do generally have thicker frames than stacking doors and flyscreen choices are more limited to retractable screens. Bifold doors also need space for the door to fold back.

Stacking doors

Stacking doors, on the other hand, are made up of multiple panels that slide along a track, stacking neatly against one another when opened. Unlike bi-fold doors, stacking doors do not fold but rather slide and stack next to each other. This means you can have larger door panel sizes with stacker doors.

Stacking doors are a great option for those who want a large opening but do not have the space for bifold doors, as they require less clearance space to operate. Stacker doors also create a fixed panel where the doors are stacked together. Depending on the brand and size of doors, stacker doors can have fly screens on the same track system or a retractable option for larger doors.

How to choose between stacking or bifold doors

When deciding between bifold and stacking doors, there are a few factors to consider:

1. Space: Bifold doors require more space than stacking doors, as they need clearance room for the panels to fold back. If you have limited space, stacking doors may be a better option.

2. Size: Bifold doors can be designed to create a larger opening than stacking doors, as they can be designed to fold back completely and create a wide opening. If you want to create a large opening, bifold doors may be a better option. However, if you want a slim appearance, stacker doors will take up less space than bifold doors.

3. Style: Both bifold and stacking doors offer a sleek, modern look, but bifold doors may be a better option if you want a more dramatic, panoramic view of your outdoor living area.

Ultimately, the choice between bifold and stacking doors will depend on your personal preferences and the specific requirements of your space.
